MEET | Muni Long. Is It Her Vocals, Range and Vocal Control, Or The Urgency In Her Lyrics? Whichever, Notice Is Served Cold On “Another”

Published

on

Earlier known by her real name Priscilla Renea (her last name is Hamilton), Muni Long has reinvented and repackaged herself and with the release of her recent self-produced output, including her latest, “Hrs And Hrs” is presently in the process of creating her own lane.

Erstwhile known as a songwriter who co-penned a number of chart-topping songs including “Imagine” by Ariana Grande, “California King Bed” By Rihanna, “A No No” By Mariah Carey, to name a few, Muni is now on a quest

Born in a rural area in Florida in 1988 Muni (pronounced (Money), like many who were born to do this, began singing as a toddler but was not comfortable singing around people until she was older.  She later stumbled upon YouTube and began posting videos of her singing in her room. She recorded videos of herself singing the dictionary, and made her own songs independently. Her channel eventually received over 30,000 subscriptions and she was given the opportunity to participate in MTV’s ‘Say What? Karaoke’.

Muni continued her quest and parlayed her energy and efforts that resulted in her, at the age of 21, signing with Capitol Records under her birth name. The release of her debut album, entitled “Jukebox” was preceded by the debut single, “Dollhouse” which was released in late 2009. The single only reached number eleven on the Heatseekers singles chart, and #31 on the Hot Dance/Club Chart becoming enough of a otherwise modest chart success for the label to commit to a second project.

Muni’s album was released was released three months after the single and got lost in the yearly holiday glut of music releases and sold a mere 1,200 copies in its first week and failed to chart, except on the Billboard Heatseekers album chart, where it stayed on the chart for one week, topping out at #21. Her second and final single “Lovesick,” was released in March of 2010, but failed to chart completely.

In 2010, Muni began writing songs for other recording artist, she co-wrote the UK #1 single “Promise This,” she also penned “California King Bed” which was included on Rihanna’s fifth studio album, ‘Loud’, which was released in late 2010.  She continued pursuing her songwriting career, landing credits on 2011 and 2012 albums by Demi Lovato, Madonna, Mika, Selena Gomez, Little Mix and Chris Brown.

In the succeeding years, Muni was co-writer on the song “Worth It” by Fifth Harmony, the song reached #12 on the Hot 100, she also  co-wrote “Something Bad” a hit duet by Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert in 2014 hit duet/ The song was nominated for a Grammy Award and reached #1 on Billboards Country Chart.  The song was later chosen by NBC Sports as the opening theme for the NFL telecasts.

In 2017, Muni began venturing back into singing by performing as a featured vocalist on a few album projects, still under her birth name, and in 2018, she released “Gentle Hands” and “Heavenly“, the first two singles from her then-forthcoming album, ‘Coloured,’ a pivoted venture into Country music Videos for both singles premiered online via Paper Magazine. The album was released in the summer of 2018, marking nine years since her debut.  NPR noted that as an African-American country album, ‘Coloured ‘ as a “consciously confrontational statement,” While Rolling Stone showcased “Family Tree” within the album as a song of “empowerment.”  The song “Land of the Free”, according to NPR, serves as “an appeal for empathy toward those who live in fear of racial profiling and police brutality.

2019 was the year the pseudonym Muni Long came came into being, when Muni released the song “Midnight Snack” with an accompanying video, featuring Jacob Latimore in late 2020 Muni also set other positive actions in motion. That same year, she was also credited for co-writing Ariana Grandes’ “Just like Magic” and “Six Thirty” off the album ‘Positions.’

Explaining that Muni Long is the “protector of Priscilla.” Muni released her single titled “Build a Bae” featuring rapper Yung Bleu  in December 2020, her fourth single release of the year. She previously released her debut EP, ‘Black Like This’, which celebrates Blackness , under her co-founded label imprint, Supergiant Records. This was followed by a seven-track EP Nobody Knows in July 2021.

In November 2021, she released an eight-track EP titled Public Displays of Affection, Vibe ranked it as the 19th best R&B album of 2021.  Muni also released a music video for the EP track “Hrs and Hrs,” a song on which she “details what she can do for hours upon hours with her partner”.  In January 2022, the track “Time Machine” started going viral on TikTok  In March 2022, Muni signed with Def Jam Recordings.
